Use circles as frames
Our charter is to award scholarships to ten individuals from diverse backgrounds every year. Adobe will fund $25,000, or up to $100,000 to each student over the course of four years, towards tuition at an accredited undergraduate design program starting in the fall of 2020. These efforts are intended as a first step towards solving the design industry’s challenges in representation from minorities. We also hope it serves as the start of a new discussion on who gets to participate in design, a question that ultimately ladders back to our core challenge of where design is headed over the next decade and beyond.

The Symbolism of Circles in Design
We’ve launched several initiatives, such as the Design Circle scholarship, to accelerate representation, growth, and advancement for these communities and build a more diverse talent pipeline. It’s such a great honor for me to be working with so many accomplished and respected fellow designers on this initiative. It’s long been a passion of mine to bring together a group like this to help mark a change in representation in the industry, and to point a way forward for design.
The Psychological Impact of Circles in Design

Growing up in Malibu in the 1960’s, Sue spent the majority of her time immersed in nature, riding horses, hiking the Santa Monica Mountains, and getting lost in her thoughts amongst the tide-pools at Point Dune. Sue’s innate love for the outdoors became even stronger, when she sailed around the world at 20, with family and friends in a sailboat they purchased and renovated themselves. Each rug evokes a different unique sense of the California coast and deepens our appreciation of this wonderful place. Sue’s ignited passion for all things aesthetic led her to take a position at Design 1, a Los Angeles-based design firm in 1976. During her two decades directing the company, Sue led Design 1 to become the sixth largest design firm (with over 90 employees) in the United States, including international offices in Hong Kong and Paris. Our training is thorough and includes team shadowing, in-classroom training, one-on one coaching for the first six weeks, and ongoing mentoring including quarterly webinars. Our teams continue to coach and push each other to be the best that they can be. Shiza plans on studying Computer Science with an emphasis on cognitive science.
With National Volunteer Week in the rearview mirror, coworkers buoyed by recent acts of kindness might be looking for ways to integrate service more regularly into their professional schedules. As a designer, educator, and dancer, she combines her passion for STEM and the humanities to help drive the next generation of creatives and technologists. When she’s not working with early-stage startups, you can find her nurturing young creators at tech communities like Developh and User Experience Society. Given today’s social climate, it’s especially gratifying for me to be able to announce our second cohort of ten future designers who will receive our scholarship.
